First Home Owner Grant - what’s changed?
So, what’s changed?
The Tasmanian Government has announced that the grant will increase to $20,000 for eligible first-home buyers. The grant was temporarily increased to $30,000 for eligible transactions between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. The grant was otherwise legislated to return to $10,000 from 1 July 2026.
This boost will apply to eligible transactions from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) from 1 July 2026, you must build a new home, or purchase a newly built home.
You must move into the property as your principal place of residence for at least 6 continuous months within 12 months of completion or settlement.
First home buyer rules
You are usually not eligible if you or your spouse/de facto partner have owned residential property in Australia before 1 July 2000, owned and lived in a residential property for more than 6 months after 1 July 2000, or previously received a First Home Owner Grant anywhere in Australia.
Other changes
Another major concession scheduled to end on 30 June 2026 is the 100% stamp duty exemption for eligible first-home buyers purchasing established homes valued up to $750,000.
At this stage, there has been no confirmed announcement that the stamp duty exemption will continue beyond that date.
