Pets in rentals

Are you a current landlord? Or looking to buy your first residential investment property? Then you need to read this.

As of 20 March 2026, amendments to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 allowing pets in rental properties in Tasmania commenced.

These changes mean that tenants renting in Tasmania will have the right to keep a pet in their rental property, provided they follow the required process and comply with any relevant Council and strata by-laws.

Landlords must either give or refuse consent within 14 days.

Tenants will still be responsible for any damage caused by their pets that is beyond reasonable wear and tear.

These changes are exempt to guide dogs and assistance animals.
